install launcher.apk from android 2.1 onto 2.0.1
Friday, January 22, 2010how does having the launcher from android 2.1 on your android 2.0.1 device sound? (yay!)
since we won't be seeing the update to android 2.1 anytime soon according to verizon and motorola, we thought the least we could do is give you the launcher from it.
steps for installing:
1. go into settings -> applications and check the "unknown sources" box.
2. visit this post from your phone's browser.
3. tap and download this file onto your phone: launcher2.apk (alt link)
4. tap on the downloaded application once it has finished.
5. install it and hit "done" when finished.
6. tap your "home" button (yes the house).
7. when prompted select "launcher" and check the box to make it your default.
8. done
update 1/24: here is our video tutorial of the 2.1 launcher in action!
after you've installed and set it as your default launcher, you'll notice that it wiped out all of the application shortcuts and widgets from your 3 screens. this is sort of an inconvenience, but setting those back up is not difficult. oh, and you'll now have 5 screens to play with instead of cramming such few things into 3. cheers.
if you need further info, check out this post at alldroid.org. (thank you alldroid.org!)
the rest of the android 2.1 apps you need:
1. nexus one / sense ui launcher
2. new eclair gallery with multi-touch
3. genie news and weather 2.1
4. launcher 2.1
5. music app 2.1
6. clock app 2.1
7. flan gallery 2.1

hello. What is the use of this launcher?
ReplyDeleteIt changes the way your application drawer looks and gives you 5 screens to work with.
ReplyDeleteIts definitely worth a look.
great i was putting this off for today but now i feel free to go ahead and cheat =)
ReplyDeleteI love your site. We were all disappointed with no 2.1 update. But you give us this launcher. Your the greatest!!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, in the first screen shot, what widget is used to get that clock & weather?
i would love to see something like this for animated wallpapers! (i dont want to root my phone but i dont mind installing .apk's)
ReplyDeleteis there anything like that out there?
thanks for this launcher droid-life!
Shanejo: Its from an app called "Beautiful Widgets" that costs a couple bucks. And glad I could still give you something fun on a disappointing day. :)
ReplyDeleteWolf: No animated wallpapers for 2.0.1 devices...you have to root and install 2.1
the launcher is great, minor glitches though, names of apps not lining up under icons. turning the phone off then on fixed this issue on my droid. anyway to fix this permanently? and how do you go back and forth between 2.01 and 2.1? Great website very helpful keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteI am loving this open source concept. Being a Java developer myself, I appreciate the work and love the new launcher....my friends thought I had the new Nexus, nope.....
ReplyDeleteWhat Verizon taketh away, Droid-Life giveth. Yeah, this site rocks!
ReplyDeleteBernard: If you go into settings>applications>manage applications and then click on the launcher app, you can clear the "defaults" that are set up for. after doing that, each time you hit your home button, it should let choose the old launcher or the new one.
ReplyDeleteIs there anyway to set up the old launcher (2.0.1) as default, but still use the new one (2.1) when you want to.
ReplyDeletedid the launcher... but is it me or does anyone else complete a change in the speed of the droid? mine is significantly slower now
ReplyDeleteAnon2: As far as I know, you cannot set 2.0.1 as default and still use 2.1. I tried attaching launcher 2.1 to a shortcut, but it wont let you. Sorry :(
ReplyDeletePatrick: There are times when it seems slower, but I'm not noticing enough for it to bother me (yet anyway). I'll let you know if I hear of any others with slowness.
The issue I'm having is with crashes that actually reboot your entire phone. Happened 2-3 times last night and is not something I want to continue on for much longer.
too many force closes!!
ReplyDeleteReally? I'm not getting any...done anything weird to your droid that can help us figure this out?
ReplyDeleteMmmm I updated to 2.0.1 manually, that would be the only "weird" thing I've done to my droid...I just reinstalled the launcher but I keep getting the force closes..
ReplyDeleteIf I install this new "update", will it be possible to uninstall the 2.1 launcher if I get a bunch of force closes or a significant decrease in processing speed?
ReplyDeleteMiguel9: Hmm...not sure then. Yer getting force closes on what? The actual launcher or other apps now?
ReplyDeleteEric: You can uninstall it if that happens just like any other app.
I have a question I am currently using Home++ do I need to remove that home replacement app and use the stock b4 installing the 2.l launcher
ReplyDeleteHate to admit this but I haven't used home ++ but would suggest uninstalling to keep it all clean.
ReplyDeleteI'm much happier with Home++. GDE was my favorite home replacement until Home++. Unlike Launcher2, Home++ doesn't crash. It gives you as many screens as you want. It also gives you a card view of all of your screens for quick switching around. PLUS, you can scroll "around" your screens (e.g., from screen 7 directly to screen 1) just like with GDE.
ReplyDeleteCombine Home++ with abcOrganizer (or its free version if you don't mind losing the bookmarks/contacts support), and you have a great organizational environment.
(oh, and then there's the hyped "SlideScreen", but I don't find that appealing at all)
Yeah not a fan of SlideScreen at all but I think its time I finally take the Home++ plunge. Plus, some people wanted a review of it.
ReplyDeleteAs always, love your input Ted. Thanks man.
umm.. everysingle time i open my qwerty keyboard on the homescreen to go to landscape..it freezes..it wont let me scroll through the home screens or even click on any apps or shortcuts on my homescreens..even sometimes when iam runnin somthing and click back it happens as well..i have to put it to sleep and unlock it for it to work fine again.
ReplyDeletedoes this happen to anyone else? if so how can u fix it?
There is definitely a bug with homescreens when the keyboard is slid open...no fix that I'm aware of.
ReplyDeleteWill update as soon as there is one.
Installed... enjoyed it although a little buggy... uninstalled but now it does not function when I reinstall. Any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteI'm having the same issue with the home screens when the qwerty is open. Plus, the app launcher looks a bit goofy when you launch it in landscape. Hopefully a fix for it comes out soon. And for the anonymous poster who has the freeze up issue when in landscape, just hit the "home" soft key and it should thaw things out for you. Works for me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting these 2.1 apps. Though a bit buggy, it's nice to have these without doing a complete root. Love the site...keep up the good work.
Buggy??? Ok so what are the bugs on this again? let's make one simple list
ReplyDeleteYeah sorry everyone for the bugs. This is the most invasive app to your phone so it makes sense that it doesn't run super clean.
ReplyDeleteBugs right now include:
-off-set names under apps in app drawer
-landscape with keyboard out can lock and not display correctly
-slows phone performance (for some)
Any others anyone?
I too, have noticeably slower phone performance since installing the launcher and the phone reboots 1-2 times/day. Home screen will not (ever) go landscape unless the qwerty keyboard is open.
ReplyDeleteThe Flan Gallery works great, but I now have two identical-looking Gallery icons. Ideas?
Btw, none of the above are complaints, just info.
Love the work you are doing! Thanks!
Not sure we'll ever have a launcher from 2.1 ported to 2.0.1 that ever works perfectly.
ReplyDeleteAnd for the 2 gallery icons...you can't get rid of the old unless you root.
2.1 can't get here any faster...
I posted earlier... anyone know why launcher no longer functions after reinstall?
ReplyDeleteWade: Not totally sure. I actually reinstalled mine last night. When you say not working, you mean it wont install or you mean if you hit your home key that it wont pop up?
ReplyDeleteThe sites are down due to exceeded bandwidth, would anyone care to email me the install packages?
ReplyDeletemschlitter11@gmail
Should all be back up now!
ReplyDeleteJust DL'd on mine works great!! Thanks for all these 2.1 apps... I hate waiting hahaha
ReplyDeleteAlso got the news/weather app and works great as well
Awesome. Have fun with 'em. :)
ReplyDeleteI can't get the widgets that come with this app to work. I keep getting "problem loading widget" error msg...
ReplyDeleteThe launcher is pretty buggy. Which widgets specifically are you trying to use?
ReplyDelete@kellex: launcher installed fine but nothing happens when home button is pressed
ReplyDeleteI just installed this and my 2nd and 4th screens have a message on top saying "Problem Loading Widget". This is the first launch with no additional widgets or programs added.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I can't swipe to move screens. The buttons in the corners work fine as well as holding them down to bring up the 5 screen shots.
Just rebooted and had a force close when trying to swipe to change screens (It froze half-way between screens). Now swiping to change screens is working :)
ReplyDeleteIs there a way to know what the default "problem widgets" were on the 2nd & 4th screen? I just dragged them to the trash.
Tough to say what those widgets were. Likely just some that the developer had on his/her screens when they made this ported version.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear that your screen flick is working. :)
I don't understand why the launcher does not function After reinstall... could it be a conflict with another application? I use astro file manager... could that be the issue? I already had Dolphin Browser when I first installed Launcher and it worked fine so I doubt that is the problem.
ReplyDeleteNo... uninstalled astro and that wasn't the issue... this is frustrating. I enjoyed this launcher and really wish I could use it again.
ReplyDeleteWade: The launcher doesn't work or you can't even get the option to use it now?
ReplyDeleteIf you aren't getting the option, try installing an app like Home++ or SlideScreen and then hitting your home key. This should give you the option to change your launcher again.
Oh and leave Astro installed. You will definitely need that forever.
ReplyDeleteThanks kellex. That did the trick. Apparently after making the regular home my default home key action, launcher was unable to be used because there is no way to tell the original "regular home" to not be default. Its working now. Thank you.
ReplyDeletelooks like the new launcher slows down the processor. sometime between screens it gets stuck. notification banner also gets stuck. had to do a softreset works for a while. but still has glitches. great website as a tool.
ReplyDeletei accidentally shut the launcher down by selecting the default droid option.
ReplyDeletei go to settings/applications/manage applications/launcher
but i do not see anything to reactivate it.
i press the menu option but, again, nothing comes up.
thanks for any help!
Have problem when layout set to landscape, icon spacing too much
ReplyDeletehow do you uninstall the launcher?
ReplyDeleteBen... you need to download home++ which will alow you to choose between home, launcher, or home++. Then you can uninstall home++ if you wish. The next version of launcher should have a home chooser so that you can choose home as default and then later choose launcher as default. As of now if you choose home as default you cannot choose launcher again. (Without downloading home++)
