android 2.1 update for motorola droid goes through testing
Monday, February 08, 2010engadget has the latest rumors from a verizon source claiming the android 2.1 update for our motorola droid has hit their testing department. so maybe the supposed leaked document we brought you on saturday actually had some potential? or the february 10th date?
i'm assuming they meant no live wallpapers which is too bad as that is one of the only features we haven't seen ported over to the droid and were all looking forward to.
- It's based on Android 2.1. The build currently being circulated is identified as 2.1 version 1, mirroring the update just pushed to the Nexus One last week.
- Google Goggles is now pre-installed (no matter how unhelpful it may be).
- The browser's now multitouch enabled, just like Google Maps 3.4. Huzzah! No Flash, but then again, we weren't really expecting that.
- Interestingly, the home screen's still got the same look as 2.0.1, meaning it doesn't adopt the Nexus One's rotating 3D grid of app icons -- it's still got the pull-up drawer tab at the bottom.
- No active wallpapers. Bummer!
- The news and weather widgets introduced on the Nexus One are included. Maybe certain capabilities of 2.1 are going to be restricted to devices with minimum performance benchmarks?

I hope we still get more than 3 home pages, thats one of the most important things IMO
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree. The 3 home screens is probably the hugest mistake Motorola made with this phone. And I've tried Home++ and SlideScreen and neither left me satisfied.
ReplyDeletei could care less about the live wallpapers and 3d grid, but dammit i want my 5 screens!
ReplyDeleteNo flash? What the chit?
ReplyDeleteSeems pretty half assed.
ReplyDeleteSpeculation as to the droid hardware not being able to handle the live wallpaper and "rotating 3D grid of app icons" is out there. I find it funny as some are already running it with cooked ROMS or ported apks. Most of these updates are already available short of the ported browser. Everyone knows you can have MT with Dolphin. I am most interested in better battery life, speech to text and Flash 10.1 support. They can keep "testing" it all until then....
ReplyDeleteaaron: Flash 10.1 hasn't been released yet. Once it is, the Droid will have it.
ReplyDeleteinsektboy: Couldn't have said it better myself.
Time to root and switch to Bugless Beast? :)
what the heck! is the flash going to be pushed out by verizon? if so maybe the live wallpapers, extra screens and 3d grid may be pushed out then

ReplyDeletethis is horrible... i'm running Bugless Beast, overclocked 800... its super fast... and now they giving us half assed updates?
ReplyDeletewow... really?
i hope the nexus one come out before my 30 days are up... not because the phone isn't a great phone, but because of these half assed updates...
Jason: Flash will come out guaranteed. And if Engadget is right about this version of 2.1 not having live wallpapers, the 3d grid and 5 screens then I doubt we'll ever see those options.
ReplyDeleteWow: You probably have 3 months until the Nexus One hits Verizon.
Don't give us that bull crap Verizon or Google or who ever. That we wont be getting all the features of 2.1 because our phone can't handle it. Man please, all you have to say is that you would like to keep certain features of 2.1 for yourself for your baby the N1. And you know what, you can do that. Tell us that instead of some made up crap. We will respect you more. And that's all I have to say on that. I'm out, peace.
ReplyDeleteIll be fine with the next update as long as someone redoes the launcher so it doesnt glitch when you do landscape. Im not too crazy about rooting my phone. The wallpapers thing really does suck. though
ReplyDeleteSo far this phone has been a total joke. I get the phone because its the "iphone Killer". and two of the most important features are left out. Get my wife the cheaper Eris and it has those features. Then its suppose to be open source and its been anything but that. This was supposedly their flagship droid phone and already your saying the processor can't handle live wallpapers. BS!!!
ReplyDeleteTaken the words right out of my mouth. :)
ReplyDeleteI don't buy it there is no reason why the Droids can't handle live wallpapers or the launcher since both have already been ported to Droid Engadget are a bunch of idiots I don't believe anything they say.
ReplyDeleteNo live-wallpaper? That was what I was looking forward to. Motor sucks or is it Google's?
ReplyDeleteWTF I think we just got screwed people... No live wall paper, no animation change is not so cool. I think motorola and google pulled a fast one on us in order to keep nexus one at the top. There were plenty of people running the features on their rooted just fine so how does Moto and google explain that?
ReplyDeleteAny news on flan gallery with MT on the 2.1 update??
ReplyDeleteNo news on MT gallery but it should be included. If they are giving us MT browser and maps, then it should come as well.
ReplyDeleteThe part/version 1 speak says something to me. Perhaps they will roll out another patch with the rest when Flash is released instead of doing 3 updates in a row. Seems to make more sense to only push out 2. Throw the masses a cookie for now to shut everyone up kinda, and then throw out the rest at their leisure.
ReplyDeleteIf we do not see the rest of it by the end of the month or with the flash update, THEN I will start getting really angry. For now, I am simply just meh.
I was really excited to hear about all of the cool features that was coming with the 2.1 now I feel they got me excited for nothing and I don't believe them either because I looked on you tube and they have the Motorola "Droid" and I seen the live wallpaper and other cool feature myself!!!! So its like who's telling the truth???!!!!
