android app review: desk home

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

just wanted to cover a quick application today to give those of you without a multimedia dock the opportunity to still use the fun little clock feature which is included with your droid but may be hiding.  a little application in the market called "desk home" is available for i believe $.99 which is, well, less than a double cheesburger at mcdonald's.

if you aren't aware of what the docking app is, it basically pulls up your weather, time, music, and photos all while acting as a replacement alarm clock for you.  it's definitely a cool thing to have and with "desk home" you can play with all of those features without a dock.  just plug your phone into a charger and it'll pop right up.  you can also set it to run without plugging in.

update:  as a few people have already pointed out, there is an app called DockRunner in the market which is free and does basically the same thing.  for me personally, i like the two options that come with Desk Home:  "auto dock" and "keep screen on."

  1. DOCKRUNNER does the same thing but has far less bugs from my experience. Give it a shot

  4. i purchased deskhome when it came out and shortly after heard about dock runner. i opted to keep deskhome and uninstalled dock runner for the same exact reasons kellex mentioned. very convenient to just start charging your phone and have it take care of itself.

  5. Thanks, kellex. I had dockrunner before, but I uninstalled it because I didn't really have any use for it. I might give this one a go anyway just to try it out.

  6. The ability to have your Droid keep the screen on while charging is built into the OS. Just look in your settings.

  7. DockRunner is more stable because it's basically just activating the internal docking mode like it's in the Motorola docking station (http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/US-EN/Consumer-Product-and-Services/Mobile+Phone+Accessories/Chargers-and-Adapters/DROID-Multimedia-Station-US-EN)

you even get the symbol in the notification bar that says "Connected to Multimedia station"

it's like the Car Home app that comes with the phone.
