it's a simple monday poll this week and really one we are using to gauge our readership a little more to give us some direction going forward.  we have some ideas in mind for the future and want to feel you all out (not up) before making some pretty major decisions.

and feel free to explain why you have or have not in the comments.

  2. Any specific reasons why you won't again?

  3. Honestly... I found that I didn't really "need" it. I love my Droid the way it is and I already have the 2.1 APK's (thanks to you) and I'm a happy camper. Do look forward to the official 2.1 update though.

  4. Currently un-rooted, but tempted to try. Still researching and debating whether it is worth it for me at this point.

  5. I've been tempted to root, but I can usually get most of the functionality that I'm looking for out of apps that are available on the market. It's also nice to have an unrooted phone for troubleshooting purposes with customers.

  6. I'm unrooted simply because I don't understand how to do it, what the benefits are to rooting, and is it safe for my phone? But I'm happy with my phone the way it is. I've tryed the 2.1 apks thanks to you and I liked them but I want them to be released in the official update because I for some reason feel that the apk versions might mess my phone up?

  7. I am comfortable rooting but from my research the only tangible benefits are tethering and overclocking. Since I bought my droid my laptop has not left my house, making tethering unnecessary. My experience with overclocking desktops and laptops has, with my needs, left me unimpressed. I think the idea of rooting is more valuable to most people than its practical uses. For those who do root, I ask why and if I am missing anything?

  9. You can actually tether now without rooting. Download PDANet from the Market. Works great! USB or BT...

  10. Switched to Droid on Vz 3 months ago from rooted G1 on at&t. Rooting was fun but more time consuming than I cared to do. With the apks from 2.1 (thank you), I don't see a reason to yet....except maybe to remove notification bar. Wish that was a standard option for Android.

  12. Lu: Check out the Sholes Updated in the market. It'll allow you to unroot.

Check out this post we did.

  13. Still unrooted. I'm waiting for the OTA update and an updated rom after the update... which will be "soon".

  14. I rooted mine after growing tired of getting the runarond from Motorola/Verizon. I used the Sholes.info app from the Market, and it was as easy as could be. I now have a 1 ghz Droid with all the important features from 2.1 and then some. It runs so much smoother now, and Sholes updates about once a week. Don't be afraid to give it a go.

  15. What's the big deal of having it rooted in the first place??

  16. I was rooted with the sholesmod updater it was very easy to root and unroot. Honestly when I was rooted I missed GDE with 7 screens(rooted only had 5 screens from 3) and the cube effect, the 3d application doc was cool but oh well, I have the ported flan gallery back on 2.0.1 smoke glass was cool I liked the black notification bar and the pull down smoked window. I use the Ipack icons and when rooted I wasn't able to use them, that sucked. Maybe when I learn more about how to use root I might change my mind but right now I like the non rooted options more.

  17. Didn't root... was afraid to brick the phone. Also, did not want to be in a position to not have the OTA updates and then have to do everything manually. Interested in rooting for the heck of it and to be on cutting edge so long as it wasn't more trouble than it was worth.

  18. Rooted here. Longer battery life, control over every aspect of my phone. No more pointless apps (amazon mp3 & visual voicemail). Custom boot screens, overclocking, and the fact that I can incorporate different aspects from different phones such as HTC has me hooked. Might not be for everyone but its for me.

  19. I was in the process of rooting my phone, but I changed my mind. I actually rooted it, and then unrooted it right away. I'm somewhat of a perfectionist when it comes to my phone, so I didn't want to deal with all the bugs I read about. Instead I installed all the ported apps from 2.1 . I REALLY love the launchers, but both versions run too slow and cause mild freezes on my phone. I move to fast, and it was frustrating, so I uninstalled them. I'm extremly happy with the flan gallery, 2.1 music, and the weather/news program. I kept them, added the dolphin browser with pinch to zoom/multi touch, and I must say that this is a big change from the regular 2.01. Its good enough to hold me over till the ota update. Only reason I really wanted it was to see what the launcher looks like and the possibility of it running flash. I can wait for that, no biggie

  20. Please help an old guy out. What the heck does rooted mean with my Droid?

  21. I would surely/definitely/positively like to root my phone...its just that I have not got around it...

  22. I mainly rooted so I could Overclock. I only have it at 800 MHz, but I do notice a difference in overall smoothness. I did buy the SMUpdater from Sholes and it was very easy. It was also fun thinking I was a hacker for a split-second, on the other hand it left me with that feeling that I had torn the innocence away from my Droid.

evilbob, there are instructions out there for rooting but in a nutshell it makes you the Administrator of your phone where you have complete access to everything. Like your computer for instance and having access to your Bios.

  23. I'm a former iPhone user. Purchased a Moto Droid Dec 26th, 2009. I liked having the ability to customize my Droid so on Feb 14, 2010 I rooted. Now, I have Bugless Beast running with unlimited potential to customize.
Like many, I was apprehensive about rooting. However, thanks to the great support on Droiforums.net, I was successfully rooted and installed the BB custom rom.
