"unroot" your motorola droid before android 2.1 ota update?
Tuesday, February 09, 2010as i am by no means an expert on "rooting" your device, i'll have to defer to those who run in those circles for confirmation on this, but to my knowledge you can return back to your stock 2.0.1 before this week's ota update for 2.1 comes across.
the sholes crew has released their latest SMUpdater which is now on v6, is available in the market for $5 and apparently can do the trick.
download...
if you run into issues with the sholes app, you can check out this post at the droid forums which will walk you through unrooting step-by-step.
for those of you that have completed this task, i'd love to hear details and tips for the rest of our readers. thanks.

Why would you want to unroot?
ReplyDeleteTo get back to a stock Droid so that you can get the 2.1 official update which is coming this week.
ReplyDeleteBut OTA isn't the only way to obtain the update, right?
ReplyDeleteThat's true, someone will likely provide the file as a downloadable update.
ReplyDeleteSo if I don't do this I won't get the 2.1 update even if my Droid just has the standard stuff on it that it had when I bought it??
ReplyDeleteIf you have no rooted your phone you can receive the ota update perfectly fine. Since I've rooted my phone using sholesmod I have to go back to the stock 2.0.1 rom if I want to receive the offical update.
ReplyDeleteSholesmod updater is $5 in the market but if you rear the discription its a $5 donation to the site to keep up with bandwidth.
I've running the sholes rom now. I did it through the SMUpdater app which is super easy to use. Question though...is there a real reason I would want to revert back to 2.0.1 to get 2.1 now? I'm probably still gonna use the sholes rom either way.
ReplyDeletedon't unroot. don't do anything. most customs roms (including sholesmod) disable ota updates. just wait for them to post a 2.1 update that does NOT break your root.
ReplyDeleteI see a lot of ignorance in the rooted Droid users. They act like the whole Droid market is rooters. Its adorable seeing this blind ignorance.
ReplyDeleteI rooted, and I unrooted.
Majority of the Droid market, did not root, want to, or even know what it is.
If you love having root access and love different ROMs, you may want to stay rooted. People are right in saying that 2.1 will be rooted and updates will likely come to your custom ROMs.
ReplyDeleteThat said, if you want to go back to stock to see how 2.1 is, then you better do it soon to get the OTA update. :)
Yes most droid users do not even know what root means, however it's indicated in the title that this article is for those who DO know and HAVE a rooted phone. No one's pressuring anybody and if u ever had someone recommend rooting to you it only because it frees your phone to customize every aspect, something that many geeks in the smartphone market love to take advantage of.
ReplyDeleteyou need to goto Droid forums and download the stock zip and follow the usual process. You can find that zip in alot of different forums.I am gonna try to port the launcher to 2.1 when i get the update if it works I will obviously share the goods. If moto don't hurry I will just re-apply the ported 2.1 apps its all the same or Just go back and re-root
