install genie weather widget from android 2.1
Sunday, January 17, 2010we definitely missed the boat with this application. the genie news and weather widget from android 2.1 and the nexus one has been ported over to all android phones running 1.6 and higher and we just found out about it! in fact, this happened back in december...sorry!
one of our fantastic new readers pointed it out and we must say, this application is worth a look. you may have seen pictures and videos of this application running on nexus one devices and were probably wondering when it was available to the rest of the world? good news! it's here!
not only does it pull up your weather automatically from the weather channel, but it gives you a reader style version of any news you could want.
steps for installing:
1. go into settings>applications and check the "unknown sources" box.
2. visit this post from your phone's browser.
3. tap and download this file onto your phone: geniewidget.apk (alt link)
4. tap on the downloaded application once it has finished.
5. install it.
6. go back to one of your 3 homescreens which has space on it.
7. add a widget. you should now see "news and weather" listed.
let me know if you have any questions!
the rest of the android 2.1 apps you need:
1. nexus one / sense ui launcher
2. new eclair gallery with multi-touch
3. genie news and weather 2.1
4. launcher 2.1
5. music app 2.1
6. clock app 2.1
7. flan gallery 2.1

Works like a charm on my Droid! I love your site and I install many apps you talk about. Thanks for all you do.
ReplyDeleteThe weather doesn't work but the news does. Could it be because I already have the weather channel widget installed? I checked, My Location, but still won't pull the weather.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the widget states "no weather information", when pressed (seleted), it does in fact display my weather. Thanks for the info on this widget.
ReplyDeletemettle: great to hear!
ReplyDeleteray: i would try uninstalling the weather channel widget as it could be conflicting with it. and maybe just give it a little bit of time to refresh or even do a phone reboot.
The app settings let you change from degrees C to degrees F, but there's no setting to go from km/h to mph. Am I missing something?
ReplyDeleteWhen 2.1 FINALLY comes out officially is it going to be messed up at all because it would already have say the weather app?? is it easy to uninstall if I want to delete it... Sorry for all the questions just new to adding stuff to the Droid
ReplyDeleteJust installed and works great on my Droid... Should have had this app from the beginning!!
ReplyDeleteNone of the other 2.1 native apps work for me but this does. What makes that interesting is I am on an unrooted, bonestock T-Mobile G1. I just installed it and it works great in all aspects.
ReplyDeleteHey guys I'm new to this, and I installed it and now battery drains 10x faster than normal. And I have it set to refresh once a day. Can someone help me.
ReplyDeleteIt says in your post that it works with 1.6 phones. I tried installing this on my Sprint Hero and it says "News and Weather app could not be installed on this phone." Tried the alt link too. I made sure my security settings were correct too. Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteWell it was supposed to have been tested on 1.6 devices...
ReplyDeleteYou getting any sort of error?
I Installed the app but it wont show anything on my screen. I have to click on the widget in order to see the weather and news
ReplyDeleteCannot show correct weather icon. Just "?" question mark was shown. Anyone can help me?
ReplyDeleteIt seems to work just fine, but why is it portrait mode only. Why can't I switch it to landscape mode? It is launchable from the dock clock after all, but it always runs sideways for me in dock mode.
