the motorola droid 2.1 ota update rumor mill
Wednesday, February 10, 2010it is now 7:08pm on the west coast and we have zero confirmed ota updates of android 2.1 to motorola droid devices. now remember, that according to motorola's official facebook page, this latest update was supposed to start rolling out this week. i think we all understand that today is only wednesday and their are plenty of days left in the week for this to happen, but for whatever reason we had all heard rumors of a february 10th date. with that said, here is a list of happenings/rumors/updates that we've experienced on day 1 of the rollout...
8:53am: motorola releases 2.1 update details via faq page.
10:52am: we send the following tweet noticing that motorola has removed the details list.
Update: How embarassing. Apparently we jumped the gun on these details....1:40pm: same forum manager attempts to clarifies his post:

Sorry if I wasn't clear.1:40pm: sometime near the forum managers post, the faq page containing details is updated with the following:
* The details posted here and on the Support site were prematurely released for public view.
* They have been removed from both places.
Hope that clears up the confusion.
DROID - Android 2.12:53pm: droidforums.net member quotes his brother who apparently works for verizon...
How can I get the latest Android 2.1 software?
There is a release coming, check back soon.
My brother works for Verizon, just as a sales rep, and he just told me that he heard the update was bricking phones in their tests and was cancelled until they figure out why. Like i said he is a run of the mill sales guy who i don't know if he heard from any reputable or not4:29pm: droidforums.net member calls motorola support and receives bad news...
I just called Motorola's Android support line at 800-734-5870. The representative said that the update will not be rolling out this week or next week. They are expecting it next month. I think Cereal Killer's source might have been right about March...5:39pm: same member receives email from motorola support representative...
Motorola to me7:00pm: blogs around the world finally realize that motorola has removed the details sheet that we tweeted about 8 hours ago and spam off posts which have people assuming the update is not happening.
show details 6:28 PM (1 hour ago)

7:06pm: still no updates to be reported...
7:53pm: reader @techdave1992 speaks with motorola support and gets the most positive news of the day...
8:07pm: motorola forum manager really clarifies his statements...
I did clarify my original comment here -- easy to miss. I was only speaking about the notes. And since my information about those was so bad, please excuse me if I make no additional comments. I'm just really sorry that my error resulted in bad feelings for some Droid owners.10:05pm: another reader (@xian1218) confirms with motorola support that the update will start any time now...
8:00am (2/11): still no updates confirmed at this time and still no reason to believe that this update will not happen this week.
i'm still completely confident that the update will happen this week. just because the detail sheet was pulled and some forum manager chose some interesting words doesn't mean we aren't getting it. boy genius report and a bunch of other sites have everyone believing that motorola has lied to us and pulled the plug on the update. (love all you sites, but you've got to realize your power!) i'm not buying that nor following their logic.
i've got a facebook message confirming the update this week which has not been taken back. i've then got a details sheet released on the day that we all expected the update. sure it was taken down, but why would it be up if the ota update hadn't started yet? just chill everyone and wake up tomorrow to a bunch of droids running android 2.1.
stay tuned either way as we'll continue to provide the latest updates as we have them!

Kellex, you are the bomb.com. Thanks for the info!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm out of breath! Cheers. Beer time.
ReplyDeleteKellex,
ReplyDeleteCan you create a poll to come up with a name for this Droid obsession? I can't stop refreshing this page for updates. I don't know if I am more addicted to my Droid or this site. :)
In any case, I hope your optimism about the update proves correct. If not, I'll still enjoy using the best electronic device I've ever purchased!
Thanks for your hard work creating a true clearing house of Droid news!
This is like a soap pera. Going back and forth with Moto. Kind of funny but just silly.
ReplyDeleteI guess ill just reinstall my ported 2.1 apps til March
I just dont buy it. Why would Moto verify an OTA if 2.1 bricks the phone? I feel that they would have the actual software optimized before announcing the OTA update. They haven't said anything else beyond it is coming this week and if it dosen't without their acknowledgement it would be catastrophic to their PR and customer relations.
ReplyDeleteExactly Chris. You said that in a much simpler way than I could.
ReplyDeleteNice to see a roundup like this. I'm with you on the update this week. 2.1 PLEASE!
ReplyDeleteLike I said before don't expect the 2.1 update this week! I work for motorola and the word around is march! The reason for the leak is to get people hyped. Just like the DROID when it was going to be released.
ReplyDeleteI won't be hyped, I'll be aggravated and disenchanted.
ReplyDeleteKhuram: Motorola is too big of a company to leak release notes to build "hype" especially since that just creates negative energy and publicity around them and their products.
ReplyDeleteKellex you're right Im not Motorola's advocate but I meant it like a personal comment. I apologize for the confusion. But the update may not hit this week. I'm a DROID owner myself but Motorola is keeping things low here. But who ever leaked that info might be in trouble.
ReplyDeleteGood round up here...I can't get enough of your site...I feel the same there still many days on the wee Motorola better have something really good to make up on this disapoinments...they jumped the gun lol...and for the people that posts saying they work at motorola and bla bla if got info why not tell your employer to post it...
ReplyDeleteare we there yet? :p
ReplyDeleteit's 2:30 am West Coast time and still no OTA update...Fail!
ReplyDeleteLuckily this week still includes thurs, fri, sat crossing my fingers. But if we don't get it that we be fine. This is the best phone I've owned and it does everything I could imagine. Its helping me past time, takes great pictures of my kids, I mean if we don't get the update I'm still a die hard verizon fan, and proud droid owner. I better be after buying this droid off contract!
ReplyDeleteIf the update wasn't really planned for this week i think it might actually be now. If there was truly a few rogue Moto people saying it was coming, when it was not, you would think they would say so. The facebook post has not been retracted, nor has a statement of apology been released. I think this week is still the target. We shall see.
ReplyDeleteThis is fucking bullshit!!! First, they fail by not incorporating the live wallpaper concept to the DROID. Second, they epically failed by leaking information "prematurely," supposedly. Damn, I couldn't sleep last night when I heard the bad news coming to my phone. On another note, kellex you're the best! I love the fact how you keep the site running on a straight blog atmosphere and could give two shits about grammar and pronunciation. Makes me feel right at home.
ReplyDeleteIt is just a phone...I feel like we are over reacting a bit. I want the update too, but seriously....
ReplyDeleteJust checked...nothing @ 10:06am..
ReplyDeleteGood morning all!
ReplyDeleteI still don't understand how the Forums Manager at Motorola accidentally posted the details for the update. So lets see... he went to the meeting saying "post it". Then he says, excuse me i have to go to the bathroom, then while he's gone the rest decide to not post it or update the Droid. Then he comes back to the meeting, grabs his stuff and says, great meeting all! Goes back to his cube and posts the details??? AND it takes the rest of the staff at Motorola that long to notice his error? That's a poorly managed outfit.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing he didnt post those himself. I'm assuming someone else posted the release details, he got them and linked to it and then someone said "hey morons, we aren't releasing this update today."
ReplyDeleteNot that it makes his poorly choiced words any nicer...
... from one of the sources in the article above "it's bricking phones in their tests".. They may have released details and then pulled them but not pulled the announce from their fb page bc they expect to have it fixed before Sunday, but if it bricks even one phone in testing, then they have to pull it to prevent phone returns and whatnot.
ReplyDeleteI would guess the testing was done well before that announcement came out. Usually you don't make an announcement that big unless you are damn certain.
ReplyDeleteBricking would be a little scary though...eek.
since 2.1 is unknown... i loaded my ported 2.1 apps till the update actually releases
ReplyDeletekellex, thanks again for posting them for us to use.
Wow this whole thing got pretty crazy thanks to BGR and engadget and all teh fanboiz.
ReplyDeleteThe guy clearly stated that they had just jumped the gun on the *details of 2.1, not that they jumped the gun on the *release date. Then he reafirmed that this was the case in another post.
I'm sure it will be rolling out anyday now. Hopefully they left details out and thats why they removed them and once they post them again there will be more features added to the update. M'kay? =)
BGR is a thinly-veiled Apple fanboy site. He has even written entire articles about how he doesn't like Android. I'm sure they are thrilled about all the disappointed Droid owners they created.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone realize I'm a greedy teenage guy. I want my gorram update. First off it shouldn't be that hard for motorola to say yes the update will come and yes before iran nukes us. But going back and forth between reps doesn't work for me. I want the real deal no BS rep. My dad works for verison but he has no info cas its not his problem. But I bet I can ask his buddies. Anyhow I'm going to call motorola myself right now, and I'm going to be rude and or frank with them. I'm gonna say cut the shit I want someone who knows what they are talking about. No cubicle pawn. Then he will say he is and I will call BS and he will be like oh ur good. Then I will be like I know.......and um....where was I....oh yeah. But I don't want no BS. Um yeah I ranted on a lil bit
ReplyDeletejust talked to a motorola tech supervisor and a verizon sup both are keeping hush hush and will not comment on the ota push date other then the fact that it is coming sometime before the end of the month?! really if thats the case im terminating my verizon contract and getting a N1 i hope it dosnt come down to that but this ridiculously long wait for something that was to be released on jan 24 and the fact that the droid is getting a watered down version is enough! i knew i shouldnt have switched from an HTC phone to Motorola, just goes to show you!!
ReplyDeleteSo I called the Motorola droid help line 800 734-5870 and said I wanted to know if my droid was getting the update and she said that I would be getting the update, but as of now they don't have an actual release date. I said well on your official Facebook page you posted that it would release this week and she said, I apologize for the mix up but as of now we don't have an exact date. I said but it is coming soon she said yes soon I said but not this week? she paused then said no not this week but it will be released soon. what I'm wondering if they don't have an exact date then how can she say no not this week? anyway mabe if we all call Motorola and ask them in different ways we might be Abel to piece together around what week, day, month it will come out. very soon to me is tomarrow it might be next month to Motorola. ERIC
ReplyDeleteI guess I just don't get why we can't get a date. The notes were released plus the Facebook message...someone obviously thought this thing was ready to go so why the retraction now?
ReplyDeletelive wallpaper, 5 homescreens, and voice to text, give us that and well be happy if not some of may go to apple. Yes that is a threat!
ReplyDeleteJust called some foreigner asking about my Droid. he said go to Dubbewya dubbewya dubbewya.com/Motorola.com/mydroid.
ReplyDeletelol they have no update coming this week. its another hype fake thing. if there is going to be an official update and blog it will be on Motorola's website not face book or twitter. sorry you guys but that is the only thing that makes sense. so i say we can expect it this month maybe. but in a few weeks. honestly i think our phone isn't going to be any better because think about it. you have your phone then your used to it, and once someone says it will get better you instantly think the same. We are a crowd of sheep in a fickle. so once they announce it on their site it will most likely be posted here by kellex! so just wait people don't we have lives outside our phones?......well i guess not. but that tells you something doesn't it? lol. hey I am Ruffhousekid on you-tube. lol no one cares I'm not a spammer. but enjoy your phones people if you get to caught up in them, then well your sad. but who am i to say that, that's all i can think about with my boring high school life. also i like cheese. anything you guys need talk about? anything?
