nexus one / sense ui style 2.1 launcher for motorola droid
Saturday, February 13, 2010while we continue to wait for android 2.1 to be sent from verizon over to our droid devices, we have another launcher for you to play with and kill some time. this new launcher is essentially the nexus one 2.1 launcher we posted before but has the look of htc's sense ui. the creators (xeodoxus) have also fixed a couple of the bugs, made it run a little smoother and overall made it feel just a little more stable.
check it...
update: after doing the video, i realized that you can long press and get your 5 mini-cards for shortcuts to screens. if you long press on the browser or phone buttons, you will get these.
update 2: after more testing we're running into some of the same force closes as the previous launcher. we also have a report of a phone unable to restart after installing this launcher. please install at your own risk.
instructions for installation...
1. go into settings -> applications and check the "unknown sources" box.
2. visit this post from your phone's browser.
3. tap and download this file onto your phone: Launcher2-app.apk (alt link)
4. tap on the downloaded application once it has finished.
5. install it and tap your "home" button when installation has completed.
6. you can check "default" and then select "launcher" to set it.
(cheers once again alldroid.org)
the rest of the android 2.1 apps you need:
1. nexus one / sense ui launcher
2. new eclair gallery with multi-touch
3. genie news and weather 2.1
4. launcher 2.1
5. music app 2.1
6. clock app 2.1
7. flan gallery 2.1

Boom!
ReplyDeleteThanx bro! I was just getting bored too!
Can it be uninstalled?
ReplyDeleteYeah can be uninstalled just like any other app. Go into Settings>Applications>Manager Applications
ReplyDeleteCoffee: Yeah we needed a pick-me-up!
after installing it and setting it to default i turned off my phone then back on, but while the phone is booting back up it loops up. when the phone spells droid then shows the red eye it goes back to spelling droid then goes to the red eye then goes to spelling droid again... help!!
ReplyDeletei'm taking the SD card and restarting to see if that works...
ReplyDeletethat didn't work... help! its still looping.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kellex!
ReplyDeleteJust installed, looks great, except in two of my screens, there is a "problem loading widget" box. I assume some widgets did not like the launcher. No biggie, but I do not recall what widgets they were to reinstall.
How do I get rid of those notification boxes?
Just long press on the problem widget and drag it to the trash.
ReplyDeleteBret...ummm. not good.
yeah it happened after installing that new launcher. is there a way to reboot? something besides pulling the battery out?
ReplyDeleteLooks nice, less laggy then the original launcher port. The only problem is after switching to landscape mode by opening keyboard. The Sense UI style buttons become less than ideal. I think all these ports demonstrate why it is taking so long for our 2.1 update. Can you imagine the outcry if any lag is present after updating.
ReplyDeleteBrett: battery pull is what u should try.
ReplyDeletei did that and pulled the SD card out. problem still exists.
ReplyDeleteSo it IS possible to run the 3d launcher without overclocking the droid. Then why wouldn't Motorola include it in their version of 2.1? Granted, we don't really know with any certainty what will and won't make it in their build but based on that earlier leaked report showing what would and wouldn't make it.
ReplyDeleteAnyone getting a lot of force closes like we get with the other 2.1 launchers?
ReplyDeleteBret, try rebooting into your terminal, and wipe cache. Try that.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - how do i do that?
ReplyDeleteBret: reboot your phone. But you must hold down the power button and the x button on the physical keyboard at the same time until a screen with exclamation mark comes up.
ReplyDeleteOnce this happens, you are to hold the volume up button and the camera button at the same time to enter the phones terminal.
Bret: I rebooted and had no issue.
ReplyDeleteI hate to say this, but you can hard reset it. Hard resetting is not a big issue as your contacts are obviously all sync'd with Gmail and any apps you've paid for are also tied to your account. This will also not affect your SD Card.

Love having the phone button on every screen. The 3d app drawer is cool to look at, but laggy. I'd love to see this with the regular drawer.
ReplyDeleteKellex and Anonymous - thank you both. i am programing the phone back to factory settings.
ReplyDeleteSorry that had to happen...first I've heard of that happening with one of these apps. Definitely added an update to the post for anyone else looking to download.
ReplyDeleteno worries man. it comes with the territory. thank you for the support.
ReplyDeleteThe "labels" don't line up correctly in the app drawer. They are not beneath the icons like they should be, but off to the side. The "original" ported 2.1 caused force closes. Think I will wait for the official upgrade. Like the gallery in 2.1 much better, but was advised to remove before update for cleanest install.
ReplyDeleteThe more I've continued to play with this, the more bugs I've found. This is definitely just something to play with for a while until we get an official 2.1 update.
ReplyDeleteThis article and site has just been Buzzed.
ReplyDeleteLots of force closes during and after customizing pages. Nice when it works. Thanks, kellex, for keeping us all in the loop. Great site.
ReplyDeleteHey Kellex, what widget do you use for your clock I saw in this video.
ReplyDeleteThat's the Beautiful Widgets app. Costs a couple bucks in the market. Well worth it though.
ReplyDeletehey kellex, could you guys do a post on how to keep your droid running smooth please? since i got SeePU, it kinda irks me that I can never get it the way it's supposed to be. thanks
ReplyDeletemine is working great for now. hopefully it stays that way.
ReplyDeleteHey you know i got mad love for ya'll but this app is way to buggy for me. I have never had a problem with the other app launcher maybe a total of 3 FC's over a month which isn't bad at all. But, please keep me informed if a more stable version comes cause its a sweet looking launcher nice work to whoever created it.
ReplyDeleteIf this is installed what happens when 2.1 is released? Will the 2.1 override this app or would you have to uninstall it before downloading 2.1?
ReplyDeleteThanks in advance.
^^^ Same question for all the 2.1 apps on this site.
ReplyDeleteYou just uninstall the ported over apps before you do the big update...you can uninstall this launcher just like any normal app by going to the "manage application" folder
ReplyDeleteFawz is right. Just uninstall before the update.
ReplyDeleteStarkid: we'll let u know if there is a less buggy version soon.
i like your clock what's the name of that app?
ReplyDeleteThe same question as the one above...can you tell us how to get the clock widget u have on ur Droids in the videos?
ReplyDeleteIt's called "Beautiful Widgets" and is available in the market. It's a paid app though, but not expensive.
ReplyDeletehey Kellex, do you know which ROM it is that has has the phone and browser at the bottom like this one.
ReplyDeleteHey! i have a little problem, i can install all the apps, but one can't, and it's is the laucher2.apk...
ReplyDeletei tried to instal very times, from the 2 links, but i recived this mesage, "no se puede comprobar el paquete" (in english, "can't chek the pakage")...

thnx all! and sorry but my english, i know, is very bad!
I forget to ask this before... maybe you that could install the application of the launcher2, have any ROM different to the original which comes by default in motorola milestone? (android 2.0)
ReplyDelete??
thanks!!!
Anon1: Not sure on custom ROMs to tell you the truth. That's one area I've stayed away from for now. Sorry!
ReplyDeleteAnon2: Do you have android 2.0.1 or just 2.0? If you don't have 2.0.1 the Launcher will likely not work.
thank you for responding so quickly, but which can be the problem that don't me instal? because try several times and not leave me install it... can u help me?
ReplyDeletethank you for responding so quickly, but which can be the problem that don't me instal? because try several times and not leave me install it... can u help me?
ReplyDeletesorry... i have android 2.0 and here in argentina, the update 2.0.1 it's no yet... :(
And the others ROM's brik all the phones...

As far as I know, the Launcher2 will not work unless you have 2.0.1. Sorry!
ReplyDeleteThanks again for answering and as fast, hopefully that it will soon here update so I can prove this to me enctanto! Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteAny word on a new update? I loaded the app and really liked it, but uninstalled when someone said they couldn't restart.
ReplyDeleteyou should give credit to Xeudoxus for making this, not some anonymous "creators"
ReplyDeleteThanks for pointing that out. Updated. :)
ReplyDeleteJust downloaded and no problems so far! I'm having more luck with this launcher than the original. Thanks! Looks great!
ReplyDeleteAgreed too, love the phone/browser buttons set there, frees up some screen space!
