motorola droid app - install the flan gallery from 2.1

Friday, January 01, 2010

i'm sure you've seen the fancy flan gallery app on all the nexus one videos right?  well someone ported it to android 2.0.1 so that we can all enjoy its magic.  what a fantastic gallery application this is my friends.  this is exactly the way the gallery should have been on android 2.0.  download instructions are below with a video coming shortly...

installation instructions:

1. Download gallery_flan.apk to your computer.  (alt link)
2. Copy gallery.apk file to your sdcard.
3. On your phone go to Settings, then Applications and enable Unknown Sources.
4. On your phone, use a file manager such as Astro to browse to the gallery.apk file. Tap the file and install it.
5. You will now have two Gallery applications listed in your launcher -- the second one is the flan port. Tap it to launch the application.

video posted over at droiddog.com!

the rest of the android 2.1 apps you need:

1.  nexus one / sense ui launcher
2.  new eclair gallery with multi-touch
3.  genie news and weather 2.1
4.  launcher 2.1
5.  music app 2.1
6.  clock app 2.1
7.  flan gallery 2.1

  2. Easier install: do step 3, then visit this page in phone's browser, then click on download link and select to open in the package installer. No USB required.

  3. Rob: As far as I know only in android 2.1 can u uninstall.

Ted: Great tip. Something I hadn't thought of and makes total sense. Awesome.

  4. After installing the new gallery, be sure to check out your google account's sync settings. You will now be able to sync the gallery with your Picasa account. If enabled, your Picasa albums will show up after your first sync. Also, try typing your phone left and right while viewing photos in the gallery. As you tip, you see a glimpse of an infinite view that goes off into the horizon. That allows you to fit a few more photos on the screen when browsing. Cool app.

  6. Rob: I haven't tried it, but I bet if you rooted your Motorola DROID (search one of the many droid fan sites for info), you would be able to swap one Gallery for another... just be sure to backup the old gallery. Rooting a 2.0.1 phone and then making use of the root access requires adb, and so the process is not trivial.

  7. Rob: I just verified that with a rooted 2.0.1 device, you can get rid of the old gallery (or just rename it so it doesn't look like an app). See http://droidmuff.in/downloads/flan-gallery/

  9. Does my phone have to be rooted in order to do any of these app installs where im downloading the file to my computer and whatnot afterwards?

  10. Nope. I haven't yet rooted my phone and I'm doing it all.

If it ever comes to that point, I'll make sure to include it in the instructions.

  14. thank you but I did all that but all that shows up on my sync page is my gmail and facebook.

  15. You are missing a step.

Once you get to your accounts and sync page which lists your gmail and facebook, you have to then click on the gmail account that is connected to your picasa account.

It will take you to another screen which gives you the option of Picasa.

  16. thanks again, when I click my gmail acct, it has sync contact, gmail, and calender but no picasa. thanks for your patience!

  17. Well now you've got me stumped...

If you have the flan gallery installed, it should automatically place the Picasa option on that screen...hmmm. Still have flan installed? Heh.

If you do have it installed still and that option is not there, you'll have to give me some more time to figure this one out. :(
